Elemental #2 2018

This painting, entitled Elemental #2, explores imagery expressing the essence of life: earth, air, fire and water conveying the energy of nature and the connections between all vital forces. This painting is also inspired by the natural habitat of the horseshoe crab, from the sandy dune in sunset whose golden lights become fire licking into yellow and green leaves forming the plant life in the sea fading into the colors of the ocean as the blue sky becomes the crashing waves on the sandy shore.

This painted shell is a natural object and may have blemishes, peculiarities, or distinctions that contribute to its uniqueness. 

The shell was prepared for painting by a thorough cleansing process to remove the ocean odors and detritus. It is fitted with an inner support of Fire Island driftwood, which stabilizes the inherent fragility of the dried natural shell. A leather loop is affixed to the driftwood to provide a stable hanger at the back for display.
