Dreamtime Sealife #9

This painting is from my Dreamtime Sealife series. This series was inspired by the “Dreamtime” artworks of the Indigenous Australian people and natural habitat of the horseshoe crab. The themes and motifs found in "dreaming" artwork are inextricably linked with the natural world. Traditionally, for the Aboriginal peoples, their works would depict cultural and spiritual stories like the formation of earth and life. In this piece, the colors and swirling designs are evocative of the oceans and seas where these ancient creatures have made their home for millions of years. 

 Please note that each shell is a natural object and may have blemishes, peculiarities, or distinctions that contribute to every piece's uniqueness, in this case, the large body and tiny tail. 

All the Horseshoe Crab shells I paint have been found washed up on the beach at Davis Park, Fire Island, their life force long gone from them. No Horseshoe Crabs have been harmed in the creation of these works of art!
